Cut at a full inch and a half from the backbone of the hide, where the fibre is tightest. Thick enough to carry a knife or a pair of pliers without folding over on itself.
The edges are bevelled, wetted, and burnished until they are hard and closed, and the keeper is stitched rather than glued. It is a plain belt and it is meant to be — there is nothing on it to wear out.
